Description: This illumination depicts Queen Cleopatra of Egypt sitting on a throne wearing a crown and holding a scepter in her right hand. She is pointing her finger towards a man on the right side of the image, appearing to be giving orders to him. Cleopatra and her lover, Mark Antony, both killed themselves to avoid dying at the hands of Octavian. Boccaccio believes that Cleopatra killed herself by cutting her wrists and putting asps (vipers) at the wounds to poison herself.
