As she talks about her lover, the cyclops Polyphemus overhears her and becomes outraged with jealousy because he was in love with Galatea. Polyphemus is depicted at the top of the image watching over Galatea as she talks about Acis. Polyphemus becomes so jealous of Acis that he kills him by throwing a boulder at him.
