Venus gave Hippomenes three golden apples to use during the race. Hippomenes throws the apples on the ground during the race to distract Atalanta. Hippomenes is depicted running in the image throwing an apple behind him as Atalanta looks distracted. Many people are watching their race on the sidelines. Hippomenes ends up winning the race.
