After defeating the Basque, Sancho Panza takes Don Quixote’s hand and asks for the government of an island. The knight tells Sancho to be patient, as indicated by his hand gesture. The fallen Basque is depicted in the middle ground with the ladies of the carriage. The figures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are darkened in contrast with the other elements of the composition.
