TOWN OF GIBSONS Policy Manual
POLICY # 3.3
RESOLUTION #: 91-153(9) RESOLUTION #: R2002.309 RESOLUTION #: R2011-392 RESOLUTION #: R2016-005 RESOLUTION #:
The objective of this policy is to provide a consistent approach to the naming of roads, parks and public facilities in the Town of Gibsons, while recognizing the rich history of the Town. The Town of Gibsons wishes to ensure that early settlers, community builders and volunteers are recognized for their contributions to the community.
2 SCOPE
This policy will apply to new roads created through subdivision, naming of previously unnamed roads, re-naming or existing roads, the naming of new parks acquired or dedicated by the Town, and the naming of individual features within parks. This policy will also include other right-of-ways that require an official address such as service lanes and private accesses.
3 POLICY
3.1 That Council give preference to the names of early settlers and significant figures in the community's history when naming streets, parks and public facilities.
3.2 Council may name facilities and appurtenances within parks and public places in memory or recognition of notable people or organizations that have contributed significantly to the betterment of the community or have achieved a level of prominence in their chosen field such as art, sport, commerce, politics or community service.
3.3 That the list of names attached in Schedule A, Gibsons Settlers and Significant Figures, serve as a reference for Council in selecting new names, and that the list be updated periodically with additional names and brief biographies of prominent community residents and early settlers. The attached Schedule A is not intended as an exhaustive list, but will serve as a resource in determining appropriate names.

3.4 Attached Schedule B provides a list of names of Gibsons Settlers and Significant Figures that are not recommended for use as they are contrary to this Policy or have been used in Gibsons or elsewhere on the Sunshine Coast. The attached list is to serve as a further reference to Council.
3.5 Where a name of a deceased individual has been selected for a road, park or public facility, the permission of surviving relatives should be obtained.
3.6 Any names that are chosen should consider clarity for emergency service response, mail or other delivery companies, and for residents and visitors. It is recommended that:
3.6.1
3.6.2
3.6.3
3.6.4
Any names should not be greater than 15 characters;
New road names should not be identical or similar sounding to any existing street name within the Town and surrounding areas;
Names should be only one-word names. It is strongly preferred the names not be hyphenated or have any punctuation due to potential ambiguities; and
Road names should not be difficult to spell or pronounce
3.7 Proposed new road names are to be referred to Emergency Services for comment.
