The City of Fontana has adopted naming guidelines under Administrative Procedure 20-35 to establish procedures for naming city facilities, rooms, park memorials, and historical monument signs. The policy allows residents to request naming recognition for public assets located in city parks and facilities.
The policy identifies several criteria that may guide naming decisions, including recognition of individuals or organizations who donated land, individuals who made significant contributions to the City of Fontana, historic places within the city, or prominent community benefactors. Naming requests must be submitted through a formal application to the Community Services Department.
Applications must include documentation supporting the nomination and a petition signed by Fontana residents. For facility room naming requests, a petition containing at least 750 resident signatures is required, along with background documentation describing the honoree’s contributions. Applicants must also cover costs associated with the installation of commemorative monuments or signs.
After submission, naming requests undergo a public review process that includes a public comment period and evaluation by the Parks and Recreation Commission. If the Commission determines the request is appropriate, the proposed name is forwarded to the City Council for final approval.
The policy also establishes programs for memorial tree plantings and historical monument signage that allow residents and community organizations to recognize individuals, places, or significant events that have contributed to the history and development of Fontana.
