The City of Lathrop adopted the Parks and Facilities Naming Policy to establish guidelines and procedures for naming city parks, recreation facilities, and park improvements. The policy aims to ensure that the naming process reflects community identity, recognizes local contributions, and incorporates public participation.
Names for parks and facilities may be based on geographic location, natural or man-made features, nearby streets or neighborhoods, or individuals who have made significant contributions to the Lathrop community. Individuals considered for naming recognition are typically those who have demonstrated long-term involvement in the community, including service in civic organizations, volunteer work, leadership roles, or contributions to local programs and institutions. Facilities may also be named in recognition of individuals or organizations that provide substantial financial contributions toward the development or improvement of a park or recreation facility.
The naming process involves several stages of review. Members of the public may submit written nominations with supporting documentation describing the proposed name and its significance. The Parks and Recreation Commission reviews nominations, gathers community feedback through public meetings and outreach efforts, and evaluates proposals according to the policy’s criteria. After this review, the Commission forwards its recommendation to the City Council.
The City Council has final authority to approve the name of any park or recreation facility. Through this process, the City of Lathrop seeks to ensure that facility names reflect local history, community contributions, and the character of the city while maintaining transparency and public involvement in naming decisions.
