The City of Novato established the Community Facilities Naming Policy to provide a clear process and criteria for naming public facilities other than streets. The policy ensures that naming decisions are handled consistently and reflect community values and contributions.
Requests to name a public facility must be submitted to the City Council. The Council may direct the appropriate City Commission to review the request and provide a recommendation. After considering the Commission’s recommendation, the City Council makes the final decision regarding the facility name.
Facilities may be named after individuals or organizations that played a significant role in the acquisition, planning, development, construction, or renovation of the facility. Naming may also recognize individuals or organizations that have made meaningful contributions to the community, even if they were not directly involved with the facility. In addition, facilities may be named after sponsors who provide significant financial support or based on the geographic location of the facility.
The policy also specifies that facilities cannot be named after currently serving elected or appointed officials. Each naming request is evaluated individually based on its merits. Once a naming decision is approved, a formal naming ceremony is typically held within six months of the City Council’s final decision.
