Facility Naming Policy
I. POLICY
It is the policy of the Town of Crested Butte to allow, in appropriate circumstances, the naming
of Town parks, facilities, trails, and open spaces owned by the Town of Crested Butte and
operated by the Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Trails Department (“PROST”). Requests for
the naming of public facilities shall be reserved for exceptional circumstances and the process
shall comply with the guidelines and procedures set forth in this policy.
II. DEFINTIONS
Facility: The term “Facility” means any Town-owned land or building operated by the PROST
Department, and any features affixed to the land or building including rooms, fields, parks,
courts, trails, shelters, playgrounds, and other components. The term “Facility” does not extend
to Town streets, alleys, or amenities such as trees, tables, and benches.
III. PURPOSE
The purpose of the Facility Naming Policy is to provide a clear and equitable process for
addressing Facility naming requests. The goal of this policy is to create a process by which the
naming of Facilities supports the following principles:
• Aligns with our community values of authenticity, connectedness, and boldness.
• Fosters a sense of community and honors our small-town character.
• Heightens awareness of our town’s rich history and/or natural environment
• Calls attention to points of pride in our community; to people, events and geography that
have shaped the Town, helped create our sense of place, and make our community
unique.
The naming of Facilities is a powerful and long-term identity for a public place and is often
complex and emotionally evocative. The names of Facilities tell the important stories of Crested
Butte’s history. Name changes to Facilities are generally discouraged and prohibited unless the
current name causes confusion with other properties with similar names. The Renaming of
Facilities creates expense and confusion given the necessity for changing and updating signs,
maps, websites, contact information, policies, and other Facility information and dissemination
methods.

IV. PROCEDURES
Facility Naming Considerations
The following considerations should be weighed when contemplating a Facility naming request:
• Will the name have historical, cultural, or social significance for generations to come?
• Will the name engender a strong and positive image?
• Will the name memorialize or commemorate people, places, or events that are of
enduring importance to the community?
• Will the name be identified with some major achievement or the advancement of the
public good within the community?
• Will the name be particularly suitable for the Facility based upon its geographic location,
history, or significant natural or cultural features?
• Will the name have symbolic value that transcends its ordinary meaning or use, and
enhances the character and identity of the Facility?
• Will a naming request that accompanies a donation from a person or organization result
in undue commercialization of the Facility?
Facility Naming Based Upon Contributions to the Town
The Town discourages the naming of Facilities for corporate or for-profit entities, or for an
individual, family, or organization based upon charitable giving. Other naming requests made by
contributors may be considered in lieu of individual, family, and organization names under the
following circumstances:
• The person(s) or organization(s) made significant contributions to the Facility being
named
• The person(s) or organization(s) donated the land for the Facility; and/or
• The person(s) or organization(s) has made a significant contribution to the community
over an extended period of time.
Facility Naming Process
Requests to name a Facility should be submitted in writing to the PROST Director and include
the following:
1. Name of the person/organization submitting the request
2. Current or working name of the Facility or project under consideration
3. Proposed name for the Facility
4. Rationale for the name being proposed
5. Identify how the values and considerations outlined above are being met
6. Letters of support from the community
• Requests will be considered by Town Council during a regular Town Council Meeting.
• Renaming of Facilities will be made via a Resolution of the Town Council.
• The Crested Butte Town Council reserves the right to change a Facility name at any time.
