The City of Lake Elsinore has adopted Council Policy No. 400-10 governing the naming of public parks and facilities. The policy establishes guidelines to ensure that appropriate and meaningful names are selected for parks, recreational areas, and other public facilities within the city. The policy also includes provisions for memorial tree plantings within city parks.
Under the policy, suggestions for naming new or existing parks and public facilities are first reviewed by the Community Services Department. After evaluation, recommendations are forwarded to the City Council, which holds the final authority to approve or reject proposed names. The policy encourages the selection of names that reflect the characteristics, geography, or history of the surrounding area.
Possible naming categories include nearby streets or schools, local topographical features, thematic names, commonly used names already associated with the area, or individuals who have made significant contributions to the City of Lake Elsinore. The policy also allows facility rooms or specific site amenities to be dedicated in honor of individuals as part of fundraising or capital improvement campaigns, subject to City Council approval.
In addition to facility naming, the policy provides guidelines for memorial tree plantings in public parks. Requests for memorial trees are reviewed by the Community Services Department and must comply with approved park plans and landscaping guidelines. Plaques may accompany memorial trees to commemorate individuals or special events.
Through this policy, the City of Lake Elsinore aims to ensure that the naming of public facilities and commemorative elements reflects community values, local history, and recognition of individuals who have positively influenced the city.
